The Saints John and Paul Grotto Chapel became a study in the creation of intimate spaces. Heavy Stone Walls with Wood Detailing express the natural aspect of the grotto chapel in contrast to the lightness of the plaster beams spanning the width of the space. The altar area utilizes an indirect, natural light source in combination with artificial lighting to give the allusion of depth—that the chapel was carved into rock.
The reverence of the space balances simple materials, lighting, and subtle detailing that provides an intimate and spiritual experience for the user. This unique 150-seat chapel will be used for daily Mass, small weddings, children’s Liturgy of the Word and Eucharistic adoration.
